Most high schoolers spend their summer breaks with their own teams and with their friends. There aren’t many who organize a fundraiser for their assistant coach’s three week old son.

Pana hosts first 7-on-7 of the season, goes 4-1
Football has returned as Pana kicked things off with the first 7-on-7 of the season for the area as they hosted nine other teams in a round robin tournament style 7-on-7. Teams from all over came to the 7-on-7, including Flora, Salem, Hillsboro, Arcola, Shelbyville, Litchfield, Lincoln, Cumberland, and Rochester’s JV team.

Results from the Pana LiveWell 5K Run
There were 162 runners for the first-ever Pana Community Hospital LiveWell 5K run and 3K Walk on Saturday. The course started in Pana’s Kitchell Park and made its way across the east side of Pana before crossing U. S. 51 and ending up at the front drive of Pana Community Hospital.

Putt throws two State records, Farris and Kile compete
Although going unnamed in Thursday’s recap of the preliminaries of the State track meet, there was a third competitor from the area who was at the meet on Saturday and that was Pana’s Tristan Putt. Putt competes in the wheelchair division and the other competitors in the division didn’t have to qualify for Saturday.

Pana softball overcomes rival Vandals in 12
The Pana Panther softball team and the Vandalia Vandals played nearly two full games on Monday night. After being tied at five after seven innings, Kylie Hocq led things off for Pana with a bunt single in the bottom of  inning number 12 and Lily Anderson got her to second with a single. Grace Sims stepped into the batter’s box, and on a 1-2 count, roped the pitch over the right fielder’s head to score Hocq and walk off with the 6-5 victory.

The Pana Panthers played their final home game of the year as they faced off against the Shelbyville Rams on Thursday. Despite it being a home game for Pana, it was Shelbyville who was the home team on the night. The Rams would take an early lead and would hang on to it, despite the Panthers making it interesting in the second, winning 14-3.

Pana girls track wins SCC meet; boys finish 9
The Pana girls and boys track teams traveled to Litchfield on Tuesday for the South Central Conference (SCC) meet. The Panther girls won the meet for the fourth year in a row with a final team score of 116 and the Panther boys finished in ninth with a final team score of 34.5. Pana would have a couple of conference champions with Shania Schoonover winning the 100 meter hurdles, Claire Holthaus won the 300 meter hurdles, Hollie Johnson, Jesse Gruber, Holthaus, and Bree Rochkes teamed to win the 4x400 meter relay, and Jared Beyers won the 400 meter dash.

Pana Hospital to host race Memorial Day weekend
Pana Community Hospital invites the public to participate in the first LiveWell 5K Run/3K Walk to be held on Saturday, May 26th at 8:00 am. The race begins in historic Kitchell Park and takes runners/walkers through the streets of Pana and past some to the community’s historic homes and ends at Pana Community Hospital. Registrations are being accepted now.

Pana track teams winner and runner up in triangular meet in Pana Tuesday
As noted in one of the scorebooks for the Pana High School boys and girls triangular track meet on Carol Schramm Track Tuesday afternoon, “Warmest track meet thus far!” While the temperature hovered in the low 60’s, the action was hot on the track as the PHS girls won their meet with Sullivan and Rochester with 70 points. The boys team couldn’t catch the smokin’ Rochester Rockets, but came in second, with 38 points.

PANA — Experts sometimes define the game of softball as executing the fundamentals between the white lines. The Pana Panthers softball team worked those fundamentals to perfection Thursday afternoon as they posted a 1-0 win over the Litchfield Purple Panthers at Tanner Park.

Errors prove costly in Pana's loss to Litchfield

PANA — “You give good hitting teams extra outs, and they take advantage of them.  We just can’t do that against a team like Litchfield,” Pana Baseball Coach Mike Malisia said Thursday after a 16-1 loss to the Purple Panthers. “I mean, they put up 18 runs the first time we played them because we had nine errors, that’s nine extra outs.”

The Pana baseball team traveled to Hillsboro on Tuesday night to face off against the Hillsboro Hilltoppers in a non-conference game. The Hilltoppers scored two runs in the first inning, three in the second, and another three in the fourth to top the Panthers 8-0.
