Upset Central: Panthers defeats Casey-Westfield 70-67

I said, ‘Wes, I’m going to need you to make two free-throws at the end of the game.’ I said, ‘Are you going to make them?’ He looked at me dead in the eye and said, ‘Coach I’m going to make the free-throws,’” said head coach Adam Metzger.

The Pana eighth grade volleyball team competed in a volleyball tournament on Saturday, hosted by Holy Family school in Peoria. The Panthers took second place after they defeated Champaign Holy Cross 25-10 and 25-5 and topped Normal Metcalf 25-7 and 25-13, but fell to Holy Family 25-22, 25-17, and 15-14.

The Pana seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams each played two matches against Litchfield last night, after their match earlier in the season was postponed. The seventh grade team was 1-1 on the night, as they won the first match 25-23 and 25-11, but fell in the second match 15-25 and 16-25. The eighth grade team was victorious in both matches 26-24 and 25-13 as well as 25-9 and 25-18.

For the second year, the boys and girls basketball teams in Pana teamed up for the 5,000 makes challenge. Going between third grade through Seniors in high school, basketball players start in the summer and have until the beginning of the girls basketball season in October to make 5,000 shots.

PANA — The Pana Panthers girls basketball team overcame a 10-point third quarter deficit on Thursday night to beat Arthur-Lovington, Atwood-Hammond, 57-50, and win their first IHSA Class 2A Regional title in five years. I was the first regional title for Pana Head Coach Jason Storm now in his fifth season with the Panthers.

In the wake of Taylorville’s 82-45 win over Pana Saturday night, Taylorville senior guard Ryan Ess was among the first Tornadoes to help hoist the coveted Coalminers Trophy. As Taylorville headed to the locker room, Ess hefted the trophy overhead in a display to the Tornado crowd. Some 20 minutes later, he was still toting the bulky hardware under one arm, almost like a football.

It was a different atmosphere for the Pana Panthers on Tuesday night, compared to last week. The Panthers opened the game on a 7-0 run, which electrified the bench and got them into the game. After they quieted down a little bit in the second and third quarters, the fourth quarter was rowdy, but in a good way, which helped the Panthers defeat the Indians 69-57.

Of the 16 boys teams, the Tornadoes also were top-10 at number 10.

Being the number-one seed and receiving a first-round bye, the St. Pat’s had defeated Findlay Okaw Valley on Wednesday 48-26 to reach Friday’s title game.

The Pana Panthers turned a close game at halftime into a runaway win Friday night in the Pana High School gym as they beat the Pawnee Indians, 63-40. Pana’s lead was 31-28 at there end of the first half in which Pawnee led the game three different times and it was tied three times. It is believed this was the first regular season game between the two teams - or at least in anyone’s memory.
