8th-grade Panthers fall to Vandalia in Regional
The eighth grade Pana Panthers took on Vandalia in the Hillsboro Regional on Tuesday night. The Panthers were victorious 26-24 in the first set, but fell in the next two sets 20-25 and 20-25, which ended their season.

Panthers come up just short, 59-58, in regional title
The 2019-20 basketball season ended for the Pana Panthers boys basketball team on Friday night. The championship game of the Paris Class 2A Regional was a classic contest between two programs steeped in tradition and filled with a rich history. When the final horn sounded, the Wooden Shoes of Teutopolis had eked out a 59-58 win to advance to next week’s Sectional in Shelbyville.

Pana clocks Newton 67-38 in regional win
Pana rolled up its sleeves and went to work against Newton Wednesday night in the opening game of regional play. Behind 28 points from Andrew Ambrose, the Panthers blitzed the Eagles in a 67-38, running clock victory.

“It was probably our most complete game of the season,” Pana head coach Adam Metzger said after the win.

The Pana junior high volleyball teams hosted Litchfield on Monday night. The seventh grade team was victorious in straight sets 25-7 and 25-14 while the eighth won in straight sets 25-11 and 25-14.

Panthers throttle Hiltoppers 79-34 in Senior Night blowout
Led by five seniors, the Pana Panthers boys basketball team was hitting on all cylinders Friday night and throttled the Hillsboro Hiltoppers, 79-34, in South Central Conference action. It was Senior Night for the Panthers. Seniors Wes Kile, Drake Spracklen, Bryce Edmiston, Lucas Holthaus and John Lauff did not disappoint the home crowd in their curtain call in the Pana High School gym.

Pana St. Pat's finishes third at state
For the second game in a row, Pana St. Pat’s had to play an extra three minutes on Thursday to finish as the third best team in the state. After their game on Saturday against West-Lincoln Broadwell, St. Pat’s head coach Chad Blackwell had one goal in mind for his team, finish the season with a win. It wasn’t pretty, but St. Pat’s was able to pull it off as they were victorious 36-33 in overtime against the Normal Epiphany Knights.

Pana girls fall to Teutopolis in regional final
It was a back-and-forth affair on Thursday night in the Class 2A Regional championship game between two old foes, Pana and Teutopolis. But in the  end, the Wooden Shoes were able to hit free throws and hold the Panthers at bay and come away with a 49-41 win.

Pana girls erase double-digit deficit to win in regionals
The Pana Panthers girls basketball team over came an 11-point deficit in the third quarter to defeat the Mt. Carmel Aces, 59-50, on Tuesday night to advance to the finals of the Class 2A Newton Regional on Thursday night. They will face an old nemesis, Teutopolis, who won their regional semi-final game, 50-15, over Lawrenceville, also on Tuesday night in Newton.

Tornadoes edge Pana, retain coal miner trophy
Pana brought a 21-3 record to Dolph Stanley Court Saturday night when they squared off against the then 11-12 Tornadoes in a series that has been dubbed the Coal Miners Classic, which is just one game in the broader Route 29 Rivalry.

For a game that is essentially a rivalry within a rivalry, records matter little, and that was certainly the case Saturday as Taylorville clawed their way to a 53-50 win, retaining the coal miners trophy in the process.

PANA - You might want to ask the janitors if they found any kitchen sinks in the Pana High School gym following Pana’s 61-46 South Central Conference win over visiting Litchfield on Friday night. That’s because the Purple Panthers threw everything they could against the Panthers. But, Pana was able to pull down the straps of their hard hats and weather the storm.

Danville has just four bowlers on their team in their first season of bowling, and the Panthers had four seniors who were honored and bowled on the night. Morrisonville 8th grade volleyball takes third in Pana
The Morrisonville eighth grade volleyball team traveled to Pana on Saturday to compete in the eighth grade invite. The Tomahawks finished in third place.

The Tomahawks lost to Pana in three sets, 25-17, 17-25, and 9-15. Justis Kraner led the team in service aces with four and Emilee Belsher had one. Tessa Saxe led the team in kills with nine, Kraner, Kirsten Osterholt, Madison Taylor, and Natalie Kirkendoll had three kills each, and Kaci Bethard had two. Kraner had 12 assists and Saxe had 11. Belsher led the team in digs with 12, Osterholt had 9, Bethard had 8, and Kraner and Taylor each had 6.

Lady Panthers hang on to beat Danville 61-53
On a night where Danville’s junior guard Erin Houpt finished with 36 points and became Danville’s leading scorer for either men’s or women’s basketball with 1,732 points, Pana knew they had their hands full. Pana, though, would grind out a gritty 61-53 despite Houpt’s offensive explosion.

Despite an eventual 19 points from Jonah Lauff, and 13 from Andrew Ambrose, Pana could never establish an offensive rhythm Friday night when they hosted SCC Conference rival Greenville. The Panthers, though, leaned on their defense in what be a 56-45 win that would propel them to a 19-3 record on the season.

Toppers take down Lady Panthers
The Pana Panther girls basketball team faced off against Hillsboro on Thursday  night, where they dropped their second conference game of the season with a 52-36 loss.

Jillian Hamilton helped lead the Panthers with seven points in the first quarter, followed up by three from Rhylee Freeman and two from Rachel Holthaus in the frame, but the Panther defense allowed the Hiltoppers to score 17 points in the first, which left them with a five-point deficit.

The Pana girls basketball team had a week off inbetween their previous game and their contest against Newton Tuesday, and the team looked frersh in what would ultimately be a 60-24 win for the Panthers.  “We played a very good game tonight! I'm really proud of how our girls came out after a week with no games,” said Pana head coach Jason Storm.

Spracklen shoots Pana past Nokomis for 3rd at Litchfield
At 6’8”, Nokomis’ Carter Sabol is a load in the paint who can score anywhere around the basket, and he does regularly. In fact, he finished with a game-high 22 points Saturday night in a contest against Pana. The general consensus from opposing teams is that he’s just going to get his points, and, for three quarters, that was true Saturday. Pana, though, was able to ratchet up the physicality in the fourth quarter as they shut down Sabol and rallied past Nokomis for a 50-49 win to take third place at the Litchfield Tournament.

Tuesday night saw Pana and Taylorville control their destinies at the Litchfield Tournament where both teams grabbed a big win.  The Panthers won a tough game against Civic Memorial, 75-61, and the Tornadoes breezed past host Litchfield, 69-41.

THS, Pana win openers in Litchfield Tourney
For the first time in three years, Taylorville and Pana will not face off in pool play of the Litchfield tournament. Two years ago, the Tornadoes and Panthers faced off and last season, it was the Tornado JV team that took on the Panthers. This season, the teams will need to face off in bracket play if they take on one another before their battle for the Coalminers Trophy on February 8 in Taylorville.

Pana girls beat Litchfield for 7th straight win
The Pana girls basketball team picked up their seventh win in a row and their 12th win of their last 13 games as they defeated Litchfield 46-19 on Thursday.

Rachel Holthaus and Jillian Hamilton combined for 13 of pana’s 17 in the first quarter, and it was Hamilton’s six and Anna Beyers’ two points for eight total in the second quarter as Pana led 25-11 going into the locker room at halftime.

Strong post play leads Pana over Meridian 78-65
Pana has less than 10 home games this season, so they have been looking to make the most of their opportunities in front of their home crowd. They certainly managed to impress on Tuesday when they earned a 78-65 win over Meridian.

The Panthers didn’t have a possession longer than 25 seconds in the first half as they jumped out to a 45-34 lead in what was an efficient performance Tuesday night.

A six-team tournament featuring Hoopeston, Pana, Decatur MacArthur, Decatur Eisenhower, Bloomington, and the Tornadoes saw the Tornadoes finish third with a team score of 4584 behind Pana’s 4713 and Hoopeston’s 5092.

The Pana High School girls basketball team overcame a five-point deficit in the fourth quarter, eventually tying the game at the end of regulation, 42-42, before posting an overtime, 53-46 win over the Staunton Bulldogs in the PHS gym on Thursday night is South Central Conference play.

Pana traveled to Mattoon on Tuesday night where the two teams needed two overtimes to determine a winner. Despite leading by 15 after the first quarter, Pana saw the Green Wave battle back in a big way. The Panthers, though, were able to eventually edge the Wave 73-72 in double overtime.

The Pana Lady Panthers held an 11-point lead going into the second quarter against Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City on Monday night, but the Bobcats fired back with a 14-10 second quarter to cut the lead to seven at halftime. The Panthers were aggressive in the second half and were able to close out the game with a 64-46 victory.

With Nokomis dropping Pana off of their schedule for next season, the game on Saturday became the final time that the Panthers and the Redskins will face off against one another for the foreseeable future. After a not so great shooting night on Thursday against Taylorville, Pana found its rhythm early and was able to come away with the 52-18 victory.
