High-energy Pana basketball team defeats Carlyle Indians 69-57

It was a different atmosphere for the Pana Panthers on Tuesday night, compared to last week. The Panthers opened the game on a 7-0 run, which electrified the bench and got them into the game. After they quieted down a little bit in the second and third quarters, the fourth quarter was rowdy, but in a good way, which helped the Panthers defeat the Indians 69-57.

Lady Panthers' early lead fosters their success in win over Newton
After spending last week in Effingham, the Panthers had to drive through there to get to Newton on Tuesday night. Thankfully, the success they saw in Effingham carried over to Tuesday night’s game, as they defeated Newton 49-33.

The Panthers took the early lead and never looked back on Monday afternoon as they took on the Bloomington Purple Raiders. The Panthers defeated the Raiders 53-36 to earn second place, after Effingham was declared the tournament winner on Friday.

The Pana girls basketball team had to open the Effingham tournament against the hosting Flaming Hearts on Wednesday. After Effingham opened the game on a 10-0 run and held that 10 point lead going into halftime, the game opened up for the Hearts in the second half as they defeated the Panthers 56-30.

The Taylorville and Pana boys basketball teams usually find a way to face off against each other in the Litchfield tournament, and this year was no different. Both teams had an extra day to prepare for one another, as Saturday’s game was cancelled, but the Tornadoes came out in second gear and didn’t look back en route to their 82-58 victory over the Panthers.

Of the 20 girls teams, both Taylorville and Pana finished inside the top-10 with the Panthers in ninth and Taylorville at the 10 spot. Of the 16 boys teams, the Tornadoes also were top-10 at number 10.

The Pana Sacred Heart St. Pat’s eighth grade girls basketball team won their regional championship Friday night over Sorento by a final score of 34-18. Being the number-one seed and receiving a first-round bye, the St. Pat’s had defeated Findlay Okaw Valley on Wednesday 48-26 to reach Friday’s title game.

The Pana Panthers turned a close game at halftime into a runaway win Friday night in the Pana High School gym as they beat the Pawnee Indians, 63-40. Pana’s lead was 31-28 at there end of the first half in which Pawnee led the game three different times and it was tied three times. It is believed this was the first regular season game between the two teams - or at least in anyone’s memory.

Pana avenges early loss, moves to sectional final
Revenge can be a great motivator. And in the past couple of matches for the Pana Panthers volleyball team, it featured prominently. In the Regional championship on Thursday, the Panthers avenged a loss to Newton who knocked them out of post-season play last year. And, in Monday night’s Class 2A Sectional match against Edwards County in the Cumberland High School gym, revenge played into the mental preparedness for the match.

Panthers outlast Oakwood 28-21 in Rd. 1
Something about playoff football brings out the bold side in Pana Head Coach Trevor Higgins. In a 2016 first-round game against Marshall, Higgins went for two in a boom-or-bust call. It paid off. In Saturday's first-round playoff contest with the Oakwood Comets, Higgins and his team attempted two onside kicks. Only the first was successful, but it set the tone for the whole contest. It came on the opening kickoff to start the game.

Former Pana graduate Claudia Magnussen ran with the Notre Dame girls at the Atlantic Coast Conference cross-country race on Friday. The Notre Dame boys won the meet, uprooting the former five-time champion Syracuse while the Notre Dame girls finished second.
