Pana girls beat Litchfield for 7th straight win
The Pana girls basketball team picked up their seventh win in a row and their 12th win of their last 13 games as they defeated Litchfield 46-19 on Thursday.

Rachel Holthaus and Jillian Hamilton combined for 13 of pana’s 17 in the first quarter, and it was Hamilton’s six and Anna Beyers’ two points for eight total in the second quarter as Pana led 25-11 going into the locker room at halftime.

Strong post play leads Pana over Meridian 78-65
Pana has less than 10 home games this season, so they have been looking to make the most of their opportunities in front of their home crowd. They certainly managed to impress on Tuesday when they earned a 78-65 win over Meridian.

The Panthers didn’t have a possession longer than 25 seconds in the first half as they jumped out to a 45-34 lead in what was an efficient performance Tuesday night.

The Pana girls traveled to Neoga on Monday night to open their first of two games this week. The Panthers were able to get out to a lead early and didn’t look back as they won 69-34.

The Pana girls basketball team hosted Roxana in a conference matchup on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers forced 24 turnovers while they had just six themselves and they also didn’t allow Roxana a double-digit quarter in their 59-15 victory.

The Taylorville girls bowling team hosted its annual Taylorville Invitational at the Olde Bowl on Saturday. A six-team tournament featuring Hoopeston, Pana, Decatur MacArthur, Decatur Eisenhower, Bloomington, and the Tornadoes saw the Tornadoes finish third with a team score of 4584 behind Pana’s 4713 and Hoopeston’s 5092.

PANA —Nothing pretty about this one. The Pana High School girls basketball team overcame a five-point deficit in the fourth quarter, eventually tying the game at the end of regulation, 42-42, before posting an overtime, 53-46 win over the Staunton Bulldogs in the PHS gym on Thursday night is South Central Conference play.

Pana traveled to Mattoon on Tuesday night where the two teams needed two overtimes to determine a winner. Despite leading by 15 after the first quarter, Pana saw the Green Wave battle back in a big way. The Panthers, though, were able to eventually edge the Wave 73-72 in double overtime.

The Pana Lady Panthers held an 11-point lead going into the second quarter against Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City on Monday night, but the Bobcats fired back with a 14-10 second quarter to cut the lead to seven at halftime. The Panthers were aggressive in the second half and were able to close out the game with a 64-46 victory.

Coming off of their Vandalia tournament victory on Monday night, the Panthers knew that they wanted to continue rolling with a win over Carlyle on Saturday. The Panthers did just that as they defeated Carlyle 72-49.

With Nokomis dropping Pana off of their schedule for next season, the game on Saturday became the final time that the Panthers and the Redskins will face off against one another for the foreseeable future. After a not so great shooting night on Thursday against Taylorville, Pana found its rhythm early and was able to come away with the 52-18 victory.

Pana wins 1st Vandalia tourney in 7 years
“Make a statement.” That was the sentiment from head coach Adam Metzger for his Pana team from the third quarter onward.

The Panthers did just that as Pana’s defense stifled the Vandalia offense and forced the Vandals to go cold from the floor while their offense  helped Pana come away with the 33-point victory in a 73-40 final score.

The Pana Panthers took on Okaw Valley Saturday night with a chance to advance to the title game tonight. The Panthers defeated Okaw Valley 54-27 to advance to the title game tonight, which will tipoff at 8:00.

Panthers fall in title game at Riverton
It wasn’t easy, but the road to the championship game was laid out for Pana on Saturday. All they had to do was defeat a 16-1 Prairie Central team and then face off against a 15-1 Petersburg PORTA team. The Panthers defeated Prairie Central 54-37 and had a shot at the title, but fell 51-48.

RIVERTON — The Pana girls faced their toughest test of the Riverton tournament on Thursday night as they took on fellow SCC rival Hillsboro. Pana got out to a 7-0 lead to open the game, and a half-court heave at the first-quarter buzzer helped give them enough momentum to earn the 53-43 victory.

Spracklen hits 5 threes, Panthers roll past Carlinville 73-41
A running-clock win over a conference rival was just what Pana needed Friday night as they prepare for the upcoming Vandalia Holiday Tournament.

The Panthers were able to score from all three levels as they cruised past Carlinville 74-31. Drake Spracklen led the way with 21 points on a performance that saw him sink five threes. Wes Kile finished with 13 points as he was able to battle inside and play in transition, and Jonah Lauff finsihed with 10 on a night where he too had some success both underneath the rim and with his midrange jump shot.

Lady Panther rally comes up short against Clinton
With about 45 seconds left in the third quarter, Pana’s Kylie Hocq notched back-to-back baskets, and the Panthers held their first lead of the contest Saturday afternoon when they hosted the Clinton Maroons.

It was an impressive rally as the Panthers got off to a rough start, which put them in a 19-4 hole after the first quarter of play.

Trojans take down Pana 63-58
Coming off of their victory Friday night, the Panthers traveled to Auburn to face off against the Trojans. Auburn lead from the beginning and the Trojans were victorious 63-58.

Pana fell behind by one in the first quarter with a 16-15 score, but auburn made it a three-point lead at the break.

Panthers take Mid-State trophy from Shelbyville
The Pana Panthers and Shelbyville Rams faced off against one another on Tuesday night in Pana. After a tight first quarter, Pana pulled away at the beginning of the second quarter and never looked back as they went on to win 63-37 over the Rams.

Jonah Lauff lead the way for Pana in the first quarter as he netted seven of the Panther 11 points while Shelbyville had 10 points in the first quarter.

The Pana girls basketball team traveled to Mt. Zion on Saturday to take on the Braves. The Panthers trailed for a majority of the second half, but tied things up at 50 in the fourth quarter. In the overtime, though, the Braves outscored the Panthers 12-6 to win 62-56.

Panther girls rally past Greenville for SCC win
After a close first quarter, the Pana Panthers girls basketball team looked like they would let the visiting Greenville Comets run away with the first game of the South Central Conference season. At one point, the Comets scored seven unanswered points and were up by 11, 27-16 midway through the second quarter. But the resilient Panthers made a strong second half run and were able to post a 48-46 win on their home floor.

Altamont surges past Pana in season opener
Altamont’s Aidan Jahraus had 20 points Tuesday night, so did Kaden Eirhart, and the Indians used a second half surge to cruise past Pana by a final of 72-42 in the Panthers’ season opener.

The Panthers were able to hang with the Indians for about a quarter and a half, but Altamont found a rhythm late in second quarter when they scored on five straight possessions.

The Pana girls basketball team faced off against Athens and Williamsville on Saturday. The Panthers opened the morning session with a 46-22 win over Athens and picked up a 58-39 win over Williamsville in the night session.

The second year head coach has 15 girls on her roster, an all-time high. It is a mix of seasoned bowlers and 10 first-time bowlers who hit the lanes with high expectations.

Keeling is hoping to build on last year’s experience which saw her team narrowly miss a repeat winning a regional title by a handful of pins.

Pana earns zero quarter in win over A&M
There’s always a different atmosphere when two neighboring schools are scheduled to face off against one another. That rivalar was on display Friday night at the Pana Thanksgiving Tournament when the Panthers hosted the Central A&M Raiders.

The contest between Central A&M and Pana was played tightly throughout, but the difference maker was the Panthers holding the Raiders scoreless in the second quarter as they would go on to win 50-33.

PHS Girls Basketball team in transition
Pana High School’s girls head basketball coach Jason Storm doesn’t want to call the 2019-20 season a “rebuilding year.” Rather, the coach, who is starting his sixth season at the helm, wants to refer to it as a “Transition year.”

Defending regional champs who posted a 22-10 mark last season, the team is transitioning from the loss of all conference players Shania Schoonover and Maddie Ashcraft and Katelin Weideman and Bree Rochkes. He said Schoonover and Ashcraft provided much of the scoring and rebound for last year’s squad.

“For losing just four players, we lost quite a bit,” Strom said.

Pana boys hope tide keeps rising
While the Pana High School boys basketball team finished the 2018-19 basketball season at 17-18, a late season spurt propelled the team into a six game winning streak and regional title for third year Head Coach Adam Metzger.

Last’s years Panthers finished in the top three of the South Central Conference for the first time in six years and it was the first regional title for Pana in seven season. Also, for the first time in seven years, Pana won 70% of its home games.

Now entering his fourth season, Metzger hopes to see the progress continue into the 2019-20 basketball season.

Pana's Lauff, Edmiston named 2A All-State
Pana’s incredible season may have come to a close last weekend in a quarterfinal matchup with Nashville, but the accolades are still rolling in Pana.

Two Panthers, quarterback Jonah Lauff and wide receiver Bryce Edmiston, received all-state recognition in the 2A bracket. Thirteen Panthers were named to the All-SCC conference team.

Lady Panthers clock Pawnee 65-9 in season opener
The Pana Lady Panthers opened their season on the road Tuesday night as they traveled to Pawnee to take on the Indians. Pana was aggressive in their full-court pressure, forcing turnovers and turning those into points en route to their 65-9 victory.

The Indians were scoreless in the first quarter thanks to an aggressive Pana defense that capitalized on seven turnovers and turned them into points.

“We run a lot of the same stuff that Pana does. I would say they’re a mirror image of what we do,” said Nashville Coach Stephen Kozuszek.

“Finishing in the top-10 is pretty cool, but I’m still not satisfied,” said Tornado junior Chris Cherry after his State cross country race on Saturday at Detweiller Park in Peoria.

Pana running clocks Oakwood in round 2 rout
A year ago, when the Pana Panther football team hosted the Oakwood Comets in a round-one matchup, Pana used a trio of unconventional scores to escape with the win after then quarterback Jack Armstrong found the end zone three times with his legs. Saturday’s matchup again featured a hat trick of unconventional scores; this time, it was  big man Wes Dixon who rumbled in for three one-yard touchdowns.

Pana falls to Fairfield in sectional semi-final
Walking into the gym on Monday night at Pana’s sectional contest, there was a distinct crowd advantage in favor of Fairfield. Although Fairfield is an hour away from Salem, and Pana is an hour and fifteen minutes, Fairfield brought their whole football team and filled two sections of bleachers with their fans; it feltlike a home game for the Mules.

Pana's road to the playoffs: near perfect
The Panthers notched their fourth consecutive 8-1 season under the direction of coach Trevor Higgins this year. It’s certainly been an impressive season, few would argue otherwise, but Pana is hungry to prove itself after seeing perfection slip through its grasp yet again this year.

Despite the lone loss, Pana enters post-season play as a number-one seed in the 2A bracket, and they’ll host Red Bed on Saturday afternoon. Here’s a look back at how the Panthers’ season brought them to that number-one seed.

Panthers make regional volleyball finals
Facing South Central Conference foe Vandalia for the third time this season was not an enviable task for the Pana Panthers in the semi-final match of the Teutopolis Class 2A Volleyball Regional, especially with a two-match winning streak over the Vandals. But the Panthers erased any doubt a third time would be the Vandals’ charm as they dispatch their opponent in two games, 25-14, 25-17.

Pana routs Hillsboro 61-14 in preparation for playoff run
Hillsboro may only have been a 1-7 team heading into the final week of a the regular season, but, for Pana, it was still an important game.

The Panthers were looking to bounce back after suffering their only loss of the season a week ago at the hands of Vandalia, and  Pana needed to finish strong to recapture the momentum heading into  post-season play. Friday night’s contest was also critically important in Pana’s pursuit of a first-round home playoff game.
