Taylorville, Pana, and Central A&M all awaited their playoff fates Saturday night with watch parties to view the IHSA Pairing Show for their divisions

A&M, Pana run at Carlinville
Both the Central A&M boys and girls teams advanced from the Carlinville regional on Saturday for the first time in over 12 years. Pana was also in attendance at the regional, finishing 11th in the boys race and ninth in the girls race; the Panther’s season has come to a close as no one advanced to the next round.

Back to back: Pana again perfect in SCC
For the second year in a row, the Pana Panthers remained perfect throughout their conference play and secured an undefeated SCC championship. The Panthers clinched at least a share of the title with a win over Vandalia on Tuesday, the team they clinched against last season. On Thursday, Pana defeated Hillsboro to win the title outright  in a two-set sweep, 26-24 and 25-10.

Pana’s Maddie Ashcraft stood shuffling outside the locker room Tuesday night. Her voice had a tremor when she spoke, and tears were welling in her eyes between fits of laughter, both nervous and joyous. Fellow senior Shania Schoonover seemed to enjoy the spectacle as she giggled delightfully.

Route 29 Rivals: Taylorville tops Pana in three
Both Taylorville and Pana came into the Monday’s  volleyball contest looking to better themselves with regional play right around the corner. Pana has been on a winning streak, but so have the Tornadoes, and both teams left it all on the court. Despite their different classes, this was a battle between two evenly matched foes, but it was the Tornadoes who edged out a 25-17, 23-25, and 25-18 win over the Panthers.

There were volleyball players diving and sliding for balls every where in a hotly contested match between the Panthers and the visiting Rochester Rockets. The match went three games but the Rockets came out on top, 25-22, 23-25, 20-25.

PANA — The Panther girls golf team hosted the Rockets of Rochester and the Cavaliers of Carlinville on Thursday in a triangular meet. The Panthers finished two strokes ahead of the Cavaliers and 35 behind the Rockets. Rochester finished with a team score of 192, Pana a 227, and Carlinville a 229.

The Pana boys golf team traveled to Litchfield on Wednesday to compete at the Litchfield Country Club. After getting the day off on Tuesday, the Panthers battled four other teams and soggy conditions to shoot a final score of 216, which was good enough for fourth place. Alton-Marquette won the afternoon with a 157, Roxana and Litchfield tied for second, each with a score of 192, and Staunton finished in fifth with a 240.

The Pana Junior Football League hosted the Staunton Jaguars on Saturday at Brummett Field in Pana and came away with three wins. The fifth grade Panthers blanked the Jaguars, 30-0 and the sixth grade prevailed, 30-14. Pana’s seventh grade fell, 26-6, but the eighth grade capped off the day with a win, 34-20.

The Pana Community Hospital Foundation’s 25th Annual Golf Outing at Oak Terrace Resort of Pana raised over $30,000 and featured the largest number of participants, with 36 teams registered in the 18-hole golf scramble.
