Central A&M hands Pana first loss of season Saturday

After losing their first game on Friday night to Williamsville, the Central A&M Raiders were out to make it their only loss of the weekend. They did just that, defeating St. Elmo/Brownstown in the morning session and then topping Pana in the nightcap; Pana topped Williamsville in the afternoon session.

PANA — Third-year boys head basketball coach at Pana High School, Adam Metzger, is leaning on his seniors to improve on a 10-18 from last season and an early exit from the regionals come February. He’s hoping better outside shooting and more of a presence underneath the basket will propel them this season.

In its inaugural year last year, the Christian County CEO Powder Puff football game was a big success. Big enough, in fact, that the CEO program expanded it’s reach this year. Where it was just a Taylorville affair last year, Wednesday night’s game frittered not only four Taylorville teams, but also teams from Pana and South Fork as well.

In the Regional championship on Thursday, the Panthers avenged a loss to Newton who knocked them out of post-season play last year. And, in Monday night’s Class 2A Sectional match against Edwards County in the Cumberland High School gym, revenge played into the mental preparedness for the match.

Something about playoff football brings out the bold side in Pana Head Coach Trevor Higgins. In a 2016 first-round game against Marshall, Higgins went for two in a boom-or-bust call. It paid off. In Saturday's first-round playoff contest with the Oakwood Comets, Higgins and his team attempted two onside kicks. Only the first was successful, but it set the tone for the whole contest. It came on the opening kickoff to start the game.

Pana's 12th Man group celebrates Panthers football
Since 1909, it’s been the Pana Panthers scoring touchdowns and providing the fireworks on the football field. But, since 2015, it’s been the 12th Man group that has provided the aerial fireworks at Pana home football games at Brummett Field on those touchdowns. Along the way, the group has been “diversifying,” providing not only the fireworks but also signaling a touchdown with a powerful air horn and glamorizing the entrance by the home team complete with fog. They also cook for several tailgate parties for other organizations throughout the football season.

Back to back: Pana again perfect in SCC
For the second year in a row, the Pana Panthers remained perfect throughout their conference play and secured an undefeated SCC championship. The Panthers clinched at least a share of the title with a win over Vandalia on Tuesday, the team they clinched against last season. Pana has been on a winning streak, but so have the Tornadoes, and both teams left it all on the court. Despite their different classes, this was a battle between two evenly matched foes, but it was the Tornadoes who edged out a 25-17, 23-25, and 25-18 win over the Panthers.

Panther defense stands tall against Greenville
PANA — First and goal from the two; that’s what the Pana Panther defense was working with early in Friday night’s season opener against the Greenville Comets. It came, no less, after Greenville returned the opening kickoff for an 81-yard score that preceded Pana’s opening-possession fumble, which is what stacked them up at their own goal line.

Rt. 29 Rivalry: Christer's five goals lifts Pana over Taylorville
PANA — It was a familiar scene on the soccer field last night when Pana hosted Taylorville in the Route 29 Rivalry game. Pana was up 4-0 over the Tornadoes with 13 minutes remaining in the first half on Thursday night; last year, the Panthers were also up 4-0 against Taylorville in the first half.

Rochester Rockets outlast volleyball Panthers in three games
PANA — The janitors at Pana High School didn’t have a lot of work sweeping up the floor in the gym Thursday night. There were volleyball players diving and sliding for balls every where in a hotly contested match between the Panthers and the visiting Rochester Rockets. The match went three games but the Rockets came out on top, 25-22, 23-25, 20-25.

Pana girls golf tops Carlinville, falls to Rochester
PANA — The Panther girls golf team hosted the Rockets of Rochester and the Cavaliers of Carlinville on Thursday in a triangular meet. The Panthers finished two strokes ahead of the Cavaliers and 35 behind the Rockets. Rochester finished with a team score of 192, Pana a 227, and Carlinville a 229.
