Illini Central outlasts South Fork in 50-33 loss for the Lady Ponies

”We just wern’t moving the basketball. We knew they were going to be in a zone. They have that really tall girl, and we knew that we were going to have to work the ball around and hit our outside shots. We were just cold tonight,” South Fork Girls Basketball Coach Vincent Pop said Monday night after a 50-33 loss to Illini Central.

South Fork falls in Tri-City closer
The South Fork Ponies faced off against Armstrong on Saturday in their final contest of the Tri-City Holiday Tournament. A strong start for Armstrong gave them a huge advantage in the first half, and led to their 52-25 victory.

BUFFALO — With 2:30 left to go in the third quarter, South Fork’s Mackenzie Harmon stretched overhead and pulled down a high pass from the baseline. In one seemingly fluid motion she accelerated toward the interior, found a crease, and attacked the hoop for what looked like a too easy score.

BUFFALO — The South Fork Ponies drew into two tough games on Thursday as they faced off against Olympia in the afternoon, and then getting Mt. Pulaski in the evening. The Ponies fell 61-36 to Olympia and fell 61-26 to Mt. Pulaski.

Ponies fall in Mt. Pulaski contest
The South Fork Ponies didn’t have to travel far to face off against the Mt. Pulaski Hilltoppers on Monday night in a game that got moved up from January 15. The Ponies ultimately fell 68-29, but head coach Vincent Pop had positive things to take away from the contest.

CARLINVILLE — It was snowing the first time that these two teams faced off, preventing that game from taking place. In what was a rescheduled affair, Carlinville prevailed 57-27 Thursday night when they took on the South Fork Ponies.

The South Fork Ponies hosted the South County Vipers on Monday night for their second game of conference play. The Ponies were 15-24 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter to help them carry through and win 49-43.

CEO Powder Puff game turning into annual classic
In its inaugural year last year, the Christian County CEO Powder Puff football game was a big success. Big enough, in fact, that the CEO program expanded it’s reach this year. Where it was just a Taylorville affair last year, Wednesday night’s game frittered not only four Taylorville teams, but also teams from Pana and South Fork as well.
