SHELBYVILLE — The Central A&M Raiders took their five girls and three boys to Shelbyville on Thursday afternoon to compete in the CIC conference race. The Raiders faced off against the Rams, Tuscola, St. Teresa, Clinton, Sullivan, and Tuscola. Unfortunately, neither team was able to get a runner into the top-10 to finish as an all-conference runner this season.

Central A&M cross country honors seniors
The Central A&M cross country team wasn’t expecting to have any home races this season, but they were able to get two in in the past two weeks. The one on Thursday was a little more special, though, as they honored their three senior runners.

Brandon Escobedo, who has been a member of the cross country team all four years, along with first-year runners Victoria Billups and Hadley Reed, were recognized for their successful seasons before the race on Tuesday.

A&M XC runs in first home meet
A golf course wouldn’t be the first place that comes to mind when looking to go for a run, but that is exactly what Central A&M, Cerro Gordo, Bement, and Okaw Valley runners did on Tuesday afternoon in Moweaqua.

The Moweaqua Golf Course has played home field for the Raider cross country team for a couple of years now, and although not on their original schedule, head coach Rachael Williams and athletic director Sean Hayes have been hard at work to get the Raiders home cross country meets this season.

Central A&M cross country finds success in Bement
The Central A&M Raiders traveled to Bement on Wednesday for their second cross country meet of the season. The race was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but the weather postponed the meet to Wednesday.

“It’s tough running a race a week,” said A&M head coach Rachael Williams. “You kind of get into a groove during practice, and then ramp up a little before a meet, run the meet, and then have a lighter day after the meet. It’s just the ebb and flow of the schedule.”

Girls leading the way for Central A&M XC
MOWEAQUA — The more things change, the more they stay the same.

That seems to be a motto for the Central A&M cross country team over the past couple of years. The program is on its third head coach in as many seasons, but that doesn’t seem to bother the athletes in the slightest.

IHSA rearranges 2020-2021 sports schedule
Twelve days: That is how close Illinois high school students came to their first official day of practice for the 2020 fall seasons. Instead, it will be only golf and cross country that will enjoy a traditional start to the new season.

Following an IHSA decision Wednesday, football, boys soccer, and girls volleyball have been moved to the spring. The IHSA made dozens of other amendments to various other sports as well, but none that are applicable to Christian County athletes.

Many saw the IHSA decision coming after Governor JB Pritzker held a noon press conference yesterday outlining further restrictions for youth and adult recreational sports, including those governed by the IHSA. That announcement from the governor, though, was supposed to coincide with the IHSA’s announcement, according to IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson.

Central A&M announces positive test of student
Central A&M announced on their Facebook page on Monday that they have suspended all of their extracurricular activities after a positive COVID-19 diagnosis of a student.

"Central A&M administration has been notified that a student involved in extracurricular programming received a positive diagnosis for COVID-19. We are working closely with Shelby County Public Health Department for identifying further possible cases,” Central A&M Superintendent Dr. DeAnn Heck said in the post.
