IHSA defies Pritzker, says basketball will be played
Wednesday was an unprecedented day for Illinois high school sports. For months, the IHSA has gone along with Governor J.B. Pritzker’s recommendations as they relate to sports and activities during COVID-19. Yesterday, though, the IHSA defied the Governor and announced that they intend to move forward with the winter basketball season as initially planned. The IHSA decision came one day after Pritzker designated basketball as a “high-risk” sport and placed new restrictions on it.

The IHSA board of directors and Executive Director Craig Anderson issued the following statement regarding Wednesday’s decision:

Pritzker, IDPH label high school basketball "high-risk"
Back in July, the IHSA called a special board meeting to discuss the future of fall sports amid the ongoing coronavirus.  Governor J.B. Pritzker and the Illiniois Department of Public Health (IDPH), though, released their own set of guidelines just hours in advance of the official IHSA decision.

Now, with the high school basketball season approaching, that same scenario played out again yesterday.

IHSA sets special meeting for winter sports discussion
The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Board of Directors met for its regularly scheduled virtual meeting on Monday, October 19, 2020, where the Board provided a timetable on winter sports decisions, and also voted to provide a one-time accommodation to the IHSA’s Independent Team By-law (3.100) in some sports.

The Board set a special board meeting for October 28 to announce more details about winter sports.

IHSA issues statement after TRO hearing
The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) appeared as the defendant in a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) hearing in DuPage County’s 18th Judicial Circuit Court on Thursday, October 1, 2020.

The TRO sought to rescind the IHSA Board of Director’s decision to implement modified seasons in the fall, winter, spring, and summer in 2020-21 in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ultimately, the Honorable Paul Fullerton ruled in favor of the IHSA and did not grant the TRO.

IHSA allows golf, XC sectionals
In a press release sent out by the IHSA on Wednesday, the organization announced that it will allow Sectional competitions for golf and cross country.

"The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Board of Directors announced on September 23, 2020, that they have voted to expand the IHSA State Series in two fall sports, adding a second round of postseason play in boys & girls golf and boys & girls cross country.”

IHSA Board approves modified postseason for fall sports
In a press release sent by the IHSA on Monday, the organization outlined some changes to the postseason structure for current fall sports.

“The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Board of Directors met virtually for their regularly scheduled board meeting on Monday, August 24, 2020, where the Board approved a plan to conduct modified postseason state series tournaments in boys and girls golf, boys and girls cross country, girls swimming & diving, and girls tennis this fall,” the release reads.

The approved plan will allow for a single round of regional geographic competition to be conducted the week of October 19-25, with the majority of the events expected to be held on Saturday, October 24.

IESA reverses decision; moves seasons around
In a release provided by the IESA: “The IESA Board of Directors once again held a special meeting to discuss the status of fall sports and all IESA activities for the 2020-21 school year. The meeting was convened as a result of the announcement by Governor Pritzker on Wednesday regarding youth sports.
