HSA gives 2nd winter sports update
After the IHSA board meeting on Wednesday, December 2, the IHSA provided another winter sports schedule update. The statement by Executive Director Craig Anderson was as follows:

“Given Governor Pritzker’s current mitigations, the Board has no expectation of starting low risk winter sports prior to January. The Board and IHSA staff will continue to monitor the Tier 3 Resurgence Mitigation in effect currently. When there is a timeline for the state to emerge from these restrictions, the Board is prepared to restart lower risk winter sports quickly. In addition, the Board hopes to reestablish contact days in January for any winter sports that cannot begin, as well as spring and summer sports. The introduction of the contact days will be based on mitigations from the Governor and the Illinois Department of Public Health at that time. Further guidance on contact days limits will be established at a future Board meeting.

IESA gives winter sports update
The IESA sent out a press release on Tuesday evening to provide an update on their winter schedule. The full release is as follows:

"The IESA Board of Directors met on Monday, November 9 to address the  the winter and spring sports schedules after the announcement two weeks ago by the Governor's Office that basketball had been moved to the higher risk category of the Illinois All Sports Policy and the subsequent announcement by the IHSA that they are planning to move forward with their basketball season as scheduled in November. We all are trying to make decisions without knowing what the future holds. Truly, all we can do is attempt to give direction to our membership based on what we know today and somehow still plan for the future of the Association. Not an easy task.

IHSA defies Pritzker, says basketball will be played
Wednesday was an unprecedented day for Illinois high school sports. For months, the IHSA has gone along with Governor J.B. Pritzker’s recommendations as they relate to sports and activities during COVID-19. Yesterday, though, the IHSA defied the Governor and announced that they intend to move forward with the winter basketball season as initially planned. The IHSA decision came one day after Pritzker designated basketball as a “high-risk” sport and placed new restrictions on it.

The IHSA board of directors and Executive Director Craig Anderson issued the following statement regarding Wednesday’s decision:

Pritzker, IDPH label high school basketball "high-risk"
Back in July, the IHSA called a special board meeting to discuss the future of fall sports amid the ongoing coronavirus.  Governor J.B. Pritzker and the Illiniois Department of Public Health (IDPH), though, released their own set of guidelines just hours in advance of the official IHSA decision.

Now, with the high school basketball season approaching, that same scenario played out again yesterday.
