Elementary School Association cancels remaining state series
CHRISTIAN COUNTY — The Illinois Elementary School Association (IESA) has made the very difficult decision to cancel all remaining state series activities. A telephone conference call was held on Friday, April 3, with the IESA Board of Directors at which time the final decision was made. To that end, the bowling state series, the scholastic bowl state series, all remaining music contests, and the track and field state series have been cancelled. They will not be rescheduled.

IHSA hopeful for May return
CHRISTIAN COUNTY — IHSA executive director Craig Anderson provided an update on April 1 after Governor JB Pritzker extended his stay-at-home order and also extended the shutdown of schools across Illinois until April 31.

Area winter all-conference selections announced
CHRISTIAN COUNTY — Unfortunately, there are no spring sports taking place at this time, but the winter seasons were able to conclude for area athletes and their respective conferences announced their All-Conference selections. There were three MSM boy basketball player nominees, one girl MSM nominee, one boy Apollo conference player, one Apollo girl basketball player, two girl SCC basketball players, and three boy SCC basketball players who made all-conference this season.

The season that should have been
With many spring sports supposed to have been beginning by the time this suspension will be over, area athletes have been in limbo and in a state of unknown when their seasons will start back up, if at all.

Collegiate athletes in limbo: COVID-19 impact
March 12 will forever live in the minds of the sports world as nearly every professional and collegiate sport was suspended for the foreseeable future amidst the COVID-19 outbreak. Two local athletes who continued their sports careers into college have been impacted by the outbreak are Jared Beyers and Cody Klein.

Beyers committed to run track at Greenville college and Cody Klein played football and was running track this season at Illinois College. Both athletes have had implications on their outdoor track seasons, transitioning from indoor to their outdoor seasons.

IHSA restricts state basketball tournament access
The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) announced on March 12, 2020 that it will significantly limit attendance at the remaining games in the 2020 IHSA Boys Basketball State Series, as well as at other IHSA events, to preemptively reduce the potential spread of COVID-19.

IESA State wrestling tourney cancelled
The IESA State Wrestling tournament will be cancelled this year, as it was to be held at Northern Illinois University. The tournament was set for Friday and Saturday, but coaches and schools entering the State series were informed Thursday morning that the tournament wasn’t going to happen. The email sent to the coaches stated:

Osborns compete in District Swim Meet
TAYLORVILLE — Lily Osborn age 10, of Taylorville, competed in the District Swim Championship this past weekend in Springfield and earned seven podium finishes. Her efforts qualify her for the State Swimming Meet on March 13-15, 2020 in St. John, Indiana.

YMCA swimmers compete at Time Trial meet
The YMCA Illini District held their annual Time Trial meet on Friday, February 28. The District meet was then held on Saturday, February 29. The following team members will progress to the Illinois YMCA State Meet, which will be held March 13-15:  Wyatte Guhlstorf, Kade Guhlstorf, Jonas Cunningham, Adelyn Durbin, and Ella Lundin. 24-point 3rd propels Lancers over Minutemen
“Honestly, I’d be lying if I said that we made a lot of adjustments at halftime. We just told the boys that with our defense we wear down teams, and our third quarter has usually been our money quarter on defense. Giving up only four points in the third quarter is what helped us win the game. We also took care of the ball in the fourth quarter and hit our free-throws, which was crucial for us tonight,” Lincolnwood head coach Matt Millburg reflected after a big 58-39 regional win over Bunker Fill Wednesday.

CHRISTIAN COUNTY — Taylorville already knew its destination as they will be hosting their Regional this season, but had to wait for Friday to find out what day they were going to play. With that having been announced, all of the area teams now know where and when they will be playing their postseason contests.

Lancers fall to Calvary
The Lincolnwood Lancers traveled to Springfield on Friday night to face off against the Calvary Saints in an MSM matchup. The Lancers got off to a slow start and Calvary capitalized, as they were able to defeat the Lancers 46-39.

Predators swim in Valentine's Classic
The Christian County YMCA Predator swim team traveled to Decatur on Saturday, February 8, 2020 to compete in the Valentine’s Classic. The Results were as follows:

Madelyn Beaty (15-21) was fourth in the 50 yard freestyle, fifth in the 100 yard freestyle, and third in both the 100 yard backstroke and the 100 yard breaststroke.

Rusher, Angel advance to Sectionals
Gage Rusher and Alex Angel will compete in Saturday’s individual Sectional in Vandalia.

Rusher won his first match via pinfall early in the third round of his match, then won his second match of the day on a 6-0 points decision. Unfortunately, Rusher was tech-falled in the championship match and finished second in the 120 weight class.

Lincolnwood hangs on to stay undefeated at home
56.8 seconds left in the game, Lincolnwood trails 34-38. A pass from Sam Herman off of a baseline out-of-bounds plays finds Cole Sidwell wide open in the corner. Sidwell, who was 0-4 from three in the game to that point, finds the bottom of the cup with his shot, cutting the Staunton lead to one.

BUFFALO — The Lincolnwood Lancers saw their winning streak come to an end on Friday as they fell to Tri-City in overtime. Both teams ended the fourth quarter tied at 36, and the Tornadoes came out on top with a 52-45 victory.

YMCA Predators compete in Snowball Classic
The Christian County YMCA Predators competed 600 other swindividual medleymers from 20 teams in the annual Snowball Classic Swindividual medley Meet. This three-day meet was held at the Kerasota’s YMCA in Springfield, IL.

The following members made state tindividual medleyes: Wyatte Guhlstorf, Kade Guhlstorf, Jonas Cunningham, Adelyn Durbin, and Ella Lundin.

Mohawk Classic: Day Two recap
The Edinburg Wildcats and Lincolnwood Lancers continued the Mohawk Classic, but not in Morrisonville as night two saw the tournament moved to Edinburg and Carlinville this year.

The Wildcats faced off against Nokomis and fell 56-26 while the Lancers took on the Cavies and were victorious 57-46.

VisionWay splits with Springfield Trinity Lutheran
VisionWay 6th grade boys suffered their first loss of the season to Springfield Trinity Lutheran by a final of 27-21. The team is now 10-1 on the season.  Isaac Corso led all scorers with 11 points and Hudson DeMichael added seven points and six rebounds. Ian Skelton grabbed another nine rebounds in the contest.

Broken Wrench Garage finished the night in first, SLB and Son’s, Crappie Slayers, and Town Pump Bowl tied for second, Solid 9 Pro Shop and Olde Bowl tied for fifth, Dial Mowing was seventh, and Tulleys Family Barber Shop was eighth.

Lincolnwood controls clock in 48-16 win over Edinburg
The Lincolnwood Lancers and Edinburg Wildcats opened their portion of the Mohawk Classic on Monday night as they faced off against one another in Morrisonville. “We knew after the first time we faced Edinburg, we had to control the clock a little bit more, and I thought that we were very successful in that,” said Lincolnwood head coach Matt Millburg. The Lancers were victorious over Edinburg on Monday night with a final score of 48-16.

NOKOMIS — Raymond Lincolnwood traveled to Nokomis to take on the Redskins in what will now be a yearly matchup as Nokomis will be joining the MSM conference next season. The Lancers started strong and finished stronger en route to a 50-44 victory.

VisionWay sweeps D-W
 TAYLORVILLE — The VCS boys 7th grade team moved to 7-2 Tuesday after defeating Deland-Weldon, 36-26. Kade Beckmier led all scorers with 20 points, going 4-6 from beyond the three-point arc. He also led the team with eight rebounds and five steals. Owen Younker added nine points and Finn Niemann five. Finn and Jude Niemann also helped out with five and four rebounds respectively.

TAYLORVILLE — The seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams were once again in action on Thursday, as they hosted Teutopolis. Both teams picked up wins as the seventh graders were victorious 25-9 and 25-13 while the eighth grade won 25-22 and 25-23.

FBCA hangs on to edge Edinburg 46-44
Bob Huggins at West Virginia, John Beilein at Michigan. Scott Drew at Baylor: Those three coaches were known for throwing a 1-3-1 defense at their opponents at the collegiate level. FBCA head coach Adam Jeffrey did his best to imitate the successes of those coaches when he  threw a 1-3-1 at the Edinburg Wildcats Tuesday night; it was Edinburg’s first experience with the defensive look, and it helped the Falcons earn a two-point win in the contest.
