Every other team in the county —South Fork, Central A&M, and Pana— has had their time to shine in a 7-on-7, but the Tornadoes had yet to do so. That changed on Friday night as the Tornadoes took on Pleasant Plains.

Despite dealing with the overcast conditions on Tuesday, the lightning stayed away so the Taylorville swim team could get its final home meet of the season in. “We still have kids who are working on improving their times for Conference so it was important to get this meet in,” said head coach Ryan Guhlstorf. The Taylorville team defeated Panther Creek 493-207 and the individual results were as follows:

THS and TJHS cross country to hold camp
TAYLORVILLE — The Taylorville Tornadoes cross country team will be hosting its annual conditioning camp. The camp will run from Monday through Friday for two weeks starting on July 15 and running through Friday, July 26. The camp will be held this year at the Lake Taylorville Marina area at Lake Taylorville from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Lady Tornadoes fall short in comeback bid vs SHG
Despite the rain on Tuesday, Wednesday was hot and a good drying day for the softball field. It allowed the Lady Tornadoes to host the scheduled regional semifinal games where Chatham defeated Decatur MacArthur 13-0 in the first contest and SHG topped the Tornadoes 10-7 in the second.

Taylorville, Pana to renew football rivalry Saturday
Back in the days of the Mid-State conference, Taylorville and Pana were fierce rivals on the gridiron. The Tornadoes hold the all-time series advantage with a record of 40-31-8, but Pana ruled the roost in the final years of the rivalry as they rattled off seven straight wins from 1986 through the final game in 1992.

THS baseball bounces back from 1-hit loss, splits with Effingham
The Taylorville baseball team faced off against an NCAA Division I pitcher in Effingham’s Zach Lee Tuesday night and picked up one hit in an 11-0 loss. The Tornadoes showed their resolve in game two when they took on the Hearts’ number-two pitcher in what would ultimately be a 2-1 win for the Tornadoes. Taylorville Head Coach Brian Sample called said that second game was pitching showcase by Taylorvill’es Blake Donnan.

The Tornado soccer team played its final home game and final regular season game of the year on Monday when they hosted the Bulldogs from Mahomet-Seymour. The Tornadoes allowed five goals in the first half and just three in the second but weren’t able to score themselves as they fell 8-0.

THS honors five new inductees to Hall of Fame
Three men and two women were inducted to the Taylorville Hall of Fame on Saturday in the 24th. These inductees were Cara Dey Thomas, Lacey McFarland Glenn, Bruce Meriwether, Lance Hartley, and friend of sports Dan Barry.

The night opened with Kenny Melvin, previous Hall of Fame inductee, telling a story about his time after Taylorville. Kenny was drafted to the Coast Guard in 1943 and wasn’t able to finish his senior year. Nonetheless, Melvin returned to school and played basketball at Arkansas State College. At Arkansas State, Kenny played basketball and played against Beloit, Wisconsin in the National Tournament. “At one time, on the floor in the National Tournament, there were five different guys from Taylorville High School playing for two different universities. It was definitely something to say about the program at Taylorville and the coaching staffs and community,” he added.

“We have a chance to pick off six possible regional opponents. Yeah, conference is still important, but even if we beat Mattoon and Effingham, we still won’t win the conference. Our emphasis is going to be against teams like Southeast and Jacksonville, teams that could be in our regional,” said Taylorville baseball head coach Brian Sample after the Tornadoes defeated Lanphier 12-3 on Friday night.

Hall of Fame Spotlight: Lacy McFarland Glenn
Lacy McFarland graduated from Taylorville High School in 1999 and was a four year starter and letter winner on the varsity volleyball team. Team Co-Captain and MVP in 1998, Lacy was also the only Tornado selected to the Central State 8 All-Conference First Team.

Taylorville hit the road on Saturday as they faced off against Mahomet-Seymour in baseball. The Tornadoes split with Mahomet to move to 2-4 in the conference as they won the first game 5-3, but fell in the second game 12-0.

It was a tough day on the diamond Saturday for the Lady Tornadoes when they hosted a good Mahomet-Seymour team in a doubleheader. The Bulldogs outpaced the Tornadoes 15-0 in game one and 16-0 in game two.

Hall of Fame Spotlight: Cara Dey Thomas
Cara Dey graduated from Taylorville High School in 1992 and earned four varsity letters on the Lady Tornadoes basketball team and along the way set three individual school records in rebounding and established herself as a top ten rebounder in the State of Illinois. 30 rebounds against Sacred Heart-Griffin is a record that may never be broken. 564 rebounds during her senior year and 1149 rebounds during her career are both records still standing at THS.
