For the first time in head coach Steve Walters coaching tenure at Taylorville, the Tornado girls edged Springfield High 28-29 while the boys took second to the Senators. Both the boys and the girls bested Lanphier.

“On the bus ride up here, we talked that these conditions were going to weed out the best of the best,” said Walters.

THS fall sports get back to practice despite move to spring
The crunch of colliding football pads, the shrill of a whistle, and especially the wail of the Tornado siren after a score: When sports go quiet, it’s easier to appreciate even the little things.

It’s been an unusual fall sports season to say the least, but many Tornado athletes were able to take their first steps toward a return to play this week with the beginning of the IHSA’s contact days,

Contact days, however, do not mean that pads are popping again out on the football team. From the IHSA’s standpoint, contact days mean only that coaches can have contact with their players and conduct practice.

IHSA rearranges 2020-2021 sports schedule
Twelve days: That is how close Illinois high school students came to their first official day of practice for the 2020 fall seasons. Instead, it will be only golf and cross country that will enjoy a traditional start to the new season.

Following an IHSA decision Wednesday, football, boys soccer, and girls volleyball have been moved to the spring. The IHSA made dozens of other amendments to various other sports as well, but none that are applicable to Christian County athletes.

Many saw the IHSA decision coming after Governor JB Pritzker held a noon press conference yesterday outlining further restrictions for youth and adult recreational sports, including those governed by the IHSA. That announcement from the governor, though, was supposed to coincide with the IHSA’s announcement, according to IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson.

THS AD Hadley weighs in on IHSA Return to Play
Taylorville Athletic Director Jason Hadley has had quite the first year. After being hired in January to take the place of retiring AD Paul Held, Hadley missed out on more than 100 hours of training due to COVID-19, and has had more curveballs thrown his way since.

Trying to figure out summer schedules and dealing with the ever changing guidelines that the IHSA sends out has become normal for Hadley now.

“It’s been tough,” said Hadley about the changes to Phase 4 of the IHSA’s Return to Play guidelines. “We’ve had to cancel some scrimmages. The basketball summer league was canceled, volleyball was going to go to a tournament at Millikin and that’s been canceled, football won’t have any 7-on-7’s; it’s just been a strange summer so far. The outdoor sports like football and cross country and soccer have it a little easier being that they’re outside, but they still have to keep their distance and can’t have any contact,” said Hadley.
