8/22/2019 1:34:00 PM Archaeologist to present 'Historical Tour of Sicily and Malta'
LEWISTON, Ill. — The Illinois Valley Archaeological Society (IVAS) will meet Tuesday, September 3, 2019 at the Dickson Mounds Museum beginning at 7:00 p.m. Featured speaker will be Sharon Santure, retired USDA archaeologist, will present a talk titled "An Archaeological and Historical Tour of Sicily and Malta". This event is free and the public is invited to attend. Refreshments will be available following the presentation.
The program will highlight Neolithic temple sites, Greek Theatres, Roman residences and arenas, and the magnificent fortifications of the Knights of St. John on Malta. The impact of Mt. Etna and the Mediterranean Sea, and the position of these islands midway between Europe and North Africa shaped the unique culture of the Sicilian and Maltese people. The Illinois State Museum—Dickson Mounds is located between Lewistown and Havana off Illinois Routes 78 and 97.
The museum is open free to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every day. Tours and special programs are available for groups with reservations.
