One hospitalized after violent downtown brawl
Taylorville Police Chief Dwayne Wheeler says there was a chaotic and violent brawl in downtown Taylorville Thursday night that sent one to the hospital.

According to Wheeler, a fight between five men broke out on the east side of the Taylorville square at approximately 9:30 p.m.

Wheeler says that four men —Anthony R. Chavez, 24, of Taylorville; Alfred R. Compian, 19, of Taylorville; Steven S. Frost, 23, of Taylorville; and Caleb T. Barrows of Taylorville— were wielding hammers when they approached Trevor A. Durbin,  20, of Taylorville.

Local 'smash and grab' suspects arrested
On April 2, 2020, at approximately 1:20 am TPD responded to an alarm at the Mach 1 gas station, located at Illinois Rt. 29 and Illinois Rt. 104. The alarm was for front counter motion.

Information sought in local burglary
This week Crimestoppers is seeking information in regards to a burglary that occurred in Taylorville.

Sometime between Friday, May 1, 2020 and Sunday, May 3, 2020, person or persons unknown made entry into the concession stand located on the Taylorville High School Football Field. The unknown subject or subjects damaged a door on the building to make entry. Nothing appeared to have been taken at this time. The total dollar amount of damage is unknown at this time.

Edinburg woman killed in one-car crash Saturday night
One person was killed and three others were injured in a one-car accident at 11:59 p.m. on Saturday, May 2. Deputy Christian County Coroner Austin Peters identified the victim as 35-year-old Michelle White. She died of blunt force trauma due to the accident according to the Deputy Coroner.

Two arrested for arson in Pana house fire
CHRISTIAN COUNTY — As a result of a criminal investigation conducted by the Christian County Sheriff’s Office and the Illinois State Fire Marshal Office, Eric J. Klein (age 40) from rural Pana and Leanna M. Grissom (age 39) from Pana have been arrested for Arson.

Assumption man charged, illegal firearms possession
SPRINGFIELD — An Assumption man, Randall R. Burrus, 50, made his initial appearance in federal court via teleconference on Thursday, Apr. 16, following his arrest on Wednesday, Apr. 15. Burrus is charged in a criminal complaint with possession of a firearm by a felon and with possession of a firearm after conviction for misdemeanor domestic violence.

Local man sentenced in 5 cases to serve 16 years
In a negotiated settlement of seven felony cases in 2019, James R. Coghlan, 35, of Taylorville, was sentenced to 16 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) following a hearing before Fourth Judicial Court Judge Christopher Matoush on Thursday. He pled guilty in five cases. Fines, fees and restitution in all of the cases total $60,600.

Coghlan will serve three consecutive sentences in three of the cases with two other cases concurrent. Two of the cases were dropped. Total jail time is 22 years for all five cases.

Circuit Clerk Julie Mayer issues court reminder
Although the Christian County Courthouse is closed to the public through Apr. 7, 2020, Christian County Circuit Clerk Julie Mayer and her staff are working on a reduced schedule of employees.

Currently, the Court is only hearing these types of cases at the present time: in-custody criminal matters via video conference; Juvenile Detention hearings; Juvenile Shelter Care Hearings; All Orders of Protection and emergency requests; and Any other emergency or other hearing approved by a Judge.

Sentences handed out for meth, battery
Last week, two felons were sentenced to a total of 32 years in unrelated cases Christian County Court. One was a Class X felony and the other was eligible for Class X sentencing.

On Feb. 25, Ronald E. Nigh, Jr., 42, of Taylorville, was sentenced by Fourth Judicial Circuit Court Judge Christopher Matoush to 17 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Nigh had been found guilty in Count I, aggravated domestic battery/strangle, for choking his wife during a jury trial in Christian County Court in January. The jury returned a not guilty verdict in Count II, aggravated domestic battery.
