A forty-year-old Taylorville man suspected of shooting two people in a Tuesday evening incident at 1259 N. 1250 East Road in Taylorville has been charged with first degree attempted murder.
If convicted, Nathan L. Howell could face a sentence of six years to life in prison stemming from the two charges filed against him, which include first degree attempted murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm. “The law says that you can charge attempted murder and prove attempted murder if you can prove any intent to kill. A lot of people think first degree is premeditation; there doesn’t have to be any premeditation,” Christian County State’s Attorney Mike Havera said of the charge. Thursday, July 18, 2019
Two people are in a Springfield hospital after both suffered gunshot wounds in a Taylorville shooting Tuesday night.
The Christian County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Illinois State Police, are investigating the shooting that occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m. near a residence located at 1259 N. 1250 East Road in Taylorville, just south of the Illinois Route 48 and Nokomis blacktop intersection. Police have identified the man, on parole from the Illinois Department of Correction, who led them on a chase through at least three counties on Monday. Deven A. Barger, 24, of Watson, was taken into custody on Lincoln Trail in Taylorville without incident. He is a the suspect in the murder of Samantha Cushing, 22, of Shelbyville, and her unborn child. Judge Christopher Matoush found probable cause during a nearly hour-long preliminary hearing charging Todd England, 45, of Taylorville, with 12 counts of child pornography.
Christian County State’s Attorney Michael Havera presented the court with six exhibits of the videos which were found on the defendants computer following the execution of a search warrant. Taylorville police had been alerted by Naperville police of the downloading of possible child pornography. The TPD officer testifying said the images were obtained through a “peer to peer” download, in which computer users can share files with other users. The murder trial for Quinton L. Morrissey, 20, of Pana has been set to begin on Sept. 30, 2019, at 8:30 a.m. in Christian County Court. Morrissey is accused of the May 30, 2017 murder of Stephen L. It took jurors a little more than an hour to find Brad W. Baker, 63, of Louisville, guilty of one count of driving under the influence of alcohol during trial on Monday in Christian County Court. Owen A. Herbord, 20, of Rosamond, was sentenced to six months in the Christian County Jail in connection with a 2018 fatal auto accident on Illinois Route 16 just east Rosamond by Fourth Judicial Circuit Court Judge Douglas L. Jarman under the terms of a negotiated plea reached on Monday. Herbord pled guilty to Count III in the felony information, a Class 3 felony, reckless homicide with a motor vehicle.

Joshua M. DeClerck, 36, of Pawnee, was sentenced in two cases in Christian County Court Thursday afternoon before Judge Brad Paisley.
He was sentenced to one year in the Illinois Department of Corrections for aggravated fleeing from a peace officer, followed by one year of mandatory supervised release. He was given credit for 107 days already served. Friday, June 7, 2019

He is currently charged with felony domestic assault in the third degree in connection with the death of his wife, Allissa L. Martin, 27, in St. Louis late Saturday or early Sunday morning. Monday night, at approximately 6:35 p.m., the Taylorville Police Department responded to an aggravated battery which occurred in the 700 block of East Poplar Street. Police say a victim, whose identity remains undisclosded, was struck multiple times. That victim identified the suspect as Joseph R. Sparling, 31. According to TPD, Sparling was allegedly in possession of a firearm and possibly used the firearm to “pistol whip” the victim. A Taylorville couple charged with stealing youth cheerleading funds entered into a plea agreement in Christian County Court today. Ramon A. Gutierrez and Sasha L. Gutierrez each pled guilty to theft of funds from the Taylorville Youth Cheerleading Organization.
In the negotiated plea accepted by Fourth Judicial Circuit Court Judge Christopher Matoush, each will serve two years probation and required to pay the organization $7,943.29 in restitution. Fines and fees total $9,346.29. Thursday, May 9, 2019
