'Either/Or?'
I’ve been reflecting of late on a phrase I often heard in my earlier years – “progress, not perfection”. The idea is pretty self-evident, right? We spend so much time focusing (and failing) to be perfect that we do not realize the progress we are making. It is also related to another phrase, one often given in the context of leadership – “the perfect is the enemy of the good”.

The Vultures always come

Pastor Steve Switzer

Calvary Baptist Church

TAYLORVILLE — Looking eye-to-eye with a live vulture can definitely change your perspective in a significant way. You may have never had an “up close and personal” encounter with an uncaged vulture, but some friends and I not long ago had just such an experience. A team from our church recently took a trip to the beautiful country of Guatemala. During our trip, we took the time to tour a famous national cemetery in Guatemala City, which actually has a certain amount of worldwide fame. The history and atmosphere of this cemetery were beyond fascinating.

A Simple Touch
For me, one of the most powerful stories from the ministry of Jesus comes near the beginning. In Mark 1, we are just getting introduced to Jesus and what he is doing. We’ve already seen that he can do some amazing, miraculous things. He’s already gathered a crowd for his preaching and teaching. In the midst of these early steps of ministry, Jesus encounters a man who has leprosy.

Slight momentary affliction vs seemingly eternal pain
Satan has no mercy and shows no mercy. He is the author of lies and deceptions. There is no hesitation on his part to speak lies into our hearts when we are in the darkest moments of sickness, pain, grief, depression and loneliness. He enlists the aid of the world and our sinful flesh to embrace these lies and to act upon them.

Mel Fisher had spent his life diving for buried treasure. In the late 1960’s he began a quest for the priceless treasure cargo of the fabled lost Spanish galleon “Atocha.” Every day, for more than sixteen years, Mel, his wife, his children, and his band of “Treasure Salvors” explored the waters off the coast of Florida, in search of riches.  It was said that he motivated his team and kept the dream alive by beginning each day’s hunt with the cry: “Today’s the day!”

The couples gathered for this Mass with Pope Francis knew a thing or two about marriage, since they were celebrating their 25th, 50th or 60th wedding anniversaries.

Still, the pope delivered a blunt homily on a painful family issue. The bottom line: Many Catholics do not want children.

Why conservative bastion chose liberal evangelical icon for its commencement
In a move that might surprise some, the conservative evangelical Liberty University has chosen the liberal evangelical icon Jimmy Carter to give its commencement speech this year. Based on my research into the history of evangelical higher education, however, the move makes perfect sense: The long-standing dream of conservative evangelical universities like Liberty is to be more than a niche school.

Children in church: Do they belong or not?

CHRISTIAN COUNTY — Yes, children DO belong. They are not the “FUTURE of the church”, they ARE the church NOW. As long as we think church is for adults, and children must first shed their innocence and childhood in order to be qualified as a church-member, then children will never belong:  “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder then, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these,” Jesus says famously in Luke 18.
