Christmas is coming!
TAYLORVILLE — Several years ago, during the great depression, a particular family found themselves struggling to afford anything but the bare necessities. One day the news came that a circus was coming to town. Tickets cost one dollar. The little boy came running home excited and eager to get the money from his dad.

Justice Samuel Alito on America's First Amendment wars
Almost a half-century ago, comedian George Carlin recorded his controversial "Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television" monologue.

That was then.

"Today, it would be easy to create a new list entitled, 'Things you can't say if you are a student or a professor at a college or university, or an employee of many big corporations.' And there wouldn't be just seven items on that list -- 70 times seven would be closer to the mark," said U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, via Zoom, at the recent Federalist Society National Lawyers Convention.

Discussing religious beliefs, he argued, has become especially dangerous.

Stand Firm
TAYLORVILLE — 1 Corinthians 16:13 Be on the alert, STAND FIRM in the faith, act like men, be strong. Galatians 5:1 It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore KEEP STANDING FIRM and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery. Ephesians 6:11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to STAND FIRM against the schemes of the devil. 2 Thessalonians 2:15 So then, brethren,STAND FIRM and hold to the traditions which you were taught, whether by word of mouth or by letter from us.

Background Noise
TAYLORVILLE — During this time of year, I keep a small space heater running in my office whenever I’m there, just to knock the chill off. It automatically turns on and off during the day depending on how warm I want the office to be. When the heater comes on, I notice the sound of the fan, but after a few seconds, minutes at most, I forget that it is running as I focus on the tasks at hand. The heater becomes background noise.

Restoration or a wrecking ball
“You know whether a house is being restored or condemned by the size of the tools that are out front. If you see a crane and a wrecking ball, the house isn’t being restored, it’s coming down.” Those words penned by author and teacher, Paul Tripp*, recently caught my attention. We’ve all seen a version of both scenarios: A house marked as “condemned” that is ultimately torn down and a good ol’ “fixer-upper” that someone restores to its intended beauty. There is vastly different approach to both projects.

Fear or courage?
The Apostle Paul spoke to Timothy about “perilous times” coming in what he called the latter days. Jesus warned of “deception” when teaching and being asked about His return. Seems to me, we are in that season.

What we need
Over the weekend, one of my daughters came to me feeling pretty down, and we spent a few minutes talking through her discouragement. I know her well enough to know that part of what I need to do in those moments is a bit of cheerleading. I need to build her up. That’s not to say that I’m telling her things that aren’t true just to make her feel better. Rather, I’m reminding her of what is true about herself and her circumstances to help her see a broader view of what can be. And it always makes me feel valuable in her life to walk with her through moments like this.

Blaming the body of Christ and your pastor
Now more than ever before, with everything going on in the world, we who believe, need to connect ourselves and be faithful to the body of Christ, the man or woman of God and our local assembly.

Connecting and staying connected is very important in your walk and relationship with God. I ask you today to evaluate yourself. How do you stay connected?

Headed in the right direction
When you’re in London, England, Dusseldorf, Germany is 357 miles to the east. Edinburgh, Scotland is 403 miles to the north. If you’re flying to Dusseldorf, you would not expect your airplane to land in Edinburgh. But that’s exactly what happened on March 25, 2019.

Someone from the aviation company operating British Airways filed the wrong flight path for Flight 3271 to Dusseldorf, sending the jet to Edinburgh. The pilots, cabin crew, and air traffic controllers thus assumed the plane was supposed to go to Scotland.
